VISION LOSS

Macular degeneration is a leading cause of Visual loss . The macula is part of the back of the eye that turns images to signals that allows you to see small details. It can start to break down as we get older and can present with blurred vision or colour distortion or even a whiteout in your central vision. Visual hallucinations ,making out a clock or even going up or down a stairs can become difficult. There are 2 types - dry (more common-85%) and wet ( new blood vessels grow in the macula and distort the eye ).In the dry type bits of fat or proetin collect in the retina and they could become large and distort the light. This progresses slower that the wet which affects the vision rapidly. Causes- we are not aware of all the causes but family history, over 50-females and smokers and obseity carry a greater risk.Exposure to excess sunlight can also contribute.Caucasians are more likely as they carry the gene as well .Persons with lighter eyes do not deflect the UV rays as well also giving them susceptibility.
